2011 - Looking Back

I totally wish I had started this blog last year so I could've done a 2011 recap like Katrina did. Oh well. Instead, I'm going to do the top 6 events of 2011, and 5 resolutions. (6+5=11. Get it?)

1. Birthday Trifecta (which turned into Quadfecta when Janira joined us for the day!) - Katrina and Jess came down to Springfield to visit for a weekend, since all of our birthdays are around the same time. We got manicures/pedicures, picked up Janira and shopped til we dropped for the rest of the day. If you've got a chance to hit up a Yankee Candle flagship store - do it. Be prepared to spend hours and a lot of money.

2. The Break Up. Now I know most people wouldn't include this in their Top Events list, because it was a horrendous time in my life, but it seriously opened my eyes to what I was capable of handling. I thought my life was over. I had this grand plan all set and ready to go (and if you know me, you know I'm a planner extraordinaire) and that breakup royally fucked all of it. For two weeks I was hysterical, then quickly moved into really pissed off. Then the clarity came. And while I would not give those years back for anything, the whole experience really made me grow up and, pardon me, grab life by the balls and do what I wanted to do

Drop the last year into the silent limbo of the past. Let it go, for it was imperfect, and thank God that it can go. Brooke Atkinson

Which leads me to...

3. The Move to Charlotte. Holy mother, what a terrifying and awesome experience this has been! I knew it was time to get out of Maine, experience another part of the country (no, Massachusetts does not count), and prove to myself I could start over in a new city. Moving 1000 miles away from home with whatever could fit in my car was a bit nerve-wracking, but I'm happy to say that things here are coming together quite nicely. I've met some great people while I've been here, and couldn't be happier about my decision.

4. Horseshoe Party 2011 - this was one of the funniest days of the summer. It was hotter than balls outside, and Janira, Katrina & Nick came up from MA to party with us. The horseshoe party is always a debacle of drunkenness, and this year was no exception. By 11pm there were 25 40-50 year olds sitting in a circle in the yard (no fire in the middle) singing at the top of their lungs, any words that they could come up with that sounded even remotely close to right.

5. September 17, 2011. My last day at Studio 25, which was really bittersweet, because I love those girls. The BFFs came up/down/over from wherever they live and we went out in Portland for a night on the town. Glitterbombing was born. (Sounds like a Lady Gaga song.) Needless to say, we got a bit crazy, used The Face on many men - and it worked every single time, and we also got swooped in on by a group of guys out for a bachelor party, which has led to a fairytale/movie star couple. Who knew a night out in Portland could lead to love? Love it!

6. This one is not an event, but an observation. Or something. (I'm overtired, can you tell?) When your life goes to hell, your true friends really step up. I could not be more grateful to this group of girls I call my Best Friends. It's funny, you know when you meet someone and you just know they're meant to be in your life? I've got girls from all different periods in my life who I know are here for a reason. Most of them don't know each other, but slowly they are meeting. And becoming Facebook friends, haha. So its a start.

Even though we've changed and we're all finding our own place in the world, we all know that when the tears fall or the smile spreads across our face, we'll come to each other because no matter where this crazy world takes us, nothing will ever change so much to the point where we're not all still friends.

So my 5 resolutions? Some are easy, some are lofty. We'll see what happens. I'm not usually one to make resolutions - lets face it, I'm pretty damn near perfect, so whats to resolve? JOKING.
  • Work out more. I know this is everyone's goal for the new year, every year. Once I move out of the ghetto and I can find a gym thats convenient to home and work, I will join. As of now I am doing hot yoga 2-3 times a week if I can, so that's better than nothing. I'll include "walk Bailey more" in this one too.
  • Read more. READ MORE?! Why is this even on here?! Because LIFE has gotten in the way of my reading habits and it's really starting to piss me off. I have about 50 unread books on my Kindle that I am just waiting to tackle. But if anyone wants to get into a book exchange or has some suggestions, I'd love to hear them. I need a new series to get lost in, since HP, Hunger Games and Dragon Tattoo are all done. (boohoo.)
  • Explore more. I'm in a brand new city, and I've hardly done any exploring. I know where certain things are, etc, but every weekend I should be out doing something new. (And blogging about it, of course.) But by the time the weekend comes, I'm so flippin' exhausted I want to do nothing! So buck up little camper, and get yo' ass out of the house and find some new things to do.
  • Facebook and texting, there is no excuse to not be talking to the people you love every day.
  • Recoup from the move & start a 401(k). God, how adult of me. That's a boring one.

What about you guys? Any interesting resolutions for 2012? Have a safe and happy New Year's Eve!

Let this coming year be better than all the others. Vow to do some of the things you've always wanted to do but couldn't find the time. Call up a forgotten friend. Drop an old grudge, and replace it with some pleasant memories. Vow not to make a promise you don't think you can keep. Walk tall, and smile more. You'll look ten years younger. Don't be afraid to say, 'I love you'. Say it again. They are the sweetest words in the world. - Ann Landers

Girl Talk

Do any of you follow HelloGiggles? They have some hilarious articles. Today's gem is "What Girls Talk About" - I was literally snickering in my cube on my lunch break, all by myself.

What Girls Talk About

Last week, a guy-friend asked me, “What do girls talk about when they’re together?”

I thought about that for a minute.  ”Everything.”

“That’s impossible.  You can’t talk about everything. There has to be a topic,” he said in disbelief.

“I suppose sometimes we’ll talk about something, but mostly we talk about everything.”

He just couldn’t wrap his head around it:  ”In every guy conversation there is a main topic, there is a sub-topic and then there are the details,” he explained.  ”Main Topic:  Sports.  Sub-Topic: Basketball.  Details:  ’Can you believe Carmelo Anthony’…”

Now, I might be generalizing, but in the last 31 years of my life, that sort of methodical organization hasn’t existed in a single conversation I’ve ever had with one of my BFFs, ever.  For real.  I feel like conversations with my girlfriends are filled with digressions, randomness, complaints, experiences and then everything else unclassifiable that can conveniently fall under the heading “girl talk”.  That’s what I love about spending time with girlfriends.  The sheer level of our shared conversational-ADD is generally of epic proportions.
But what the heck DO we talk about?  After a recent evening spent with one of my BFFs, I decided to make a list.  This, guy-friend, is a chronologically ordered, topic-to-topic flow of four hours of girl conversation.

This is what girls talk about when we’re together:

Main Topic: Girls.  Sub Topic: Many.  Details: Lots.

You know you relate to this article. I can't wait until the BFFs show up in February - its going to be nonstop talking, even though I literally talk to just about all of my BFFs every single day, whether through text or on the phone. (How many times can I say BFF in this entry? There it is again.)
hellacious day at work. By 4:15 I was so irritated with everyone/everything that I had to do, asking 5 questions and getting half an answer to one question, plus mind reading thrown in - I was cooked. So I came home, changed my clothes, and went to yoga. Charlotte & Raleigh people - check out Arrichion. (I think they're doing 20 days for $20 right now.)

I am so glad that I went. I almost went shopping instead, but the urge to sweat out my frustration won. And I just have one question - why are men so VOCAL about sweating? There were probably 10 guys in the class last night, and every single one of them made disgusting grunting sweaty noises the entire time. Can't you be quiet?! Suck it up dudes! Its 102 degrees in here for a reason!

Another random: (I know I'm all over the place lately but its my blog. So. And this is how I am in real life.) I just made a playlist of Lifehouse's "No Name Face" album and random Matchbox Twenty, and I suggest you do the same. Gabby reminded me how much I love that Lifehouse album (it came out in 2001!! Good lord!) over the weekend, and I've pretty much been playing it nonstop since.

One last thing - want to give a shoutout to my friend Jen who has taken on the 10 day challenge - she's a fabbity fab artist and all around awesome chick. Check her out!

Glitterbombed, Take Two

This is going to be a really excited post - I'm giving you fair warning.

First off, MY BFFS ARE COMING!!!!!!!! Well, the MA contingent of BFFs. Katrina and Janira booked their flights to come visit me in February for a pre-Valentine's Day Girls Weekend!!! I've Groupon'd some manicures for us, there will be a lot of shopping, lots of laughing, and let's be real: LOTS OF GLITTER. HJK may be a little out of control that weekend. Watch out, Charlotte.

Secondly, I wanna give a shout out to my new followers (who I don't even know - do you understand how excited this makes me?!) I can tell just from your blogs that you girls are my people. Welcome. <3

Do you want to follow my blog? Because I want you to. See that link over on the right that says Join This Site? Click it. Walks you through it.

So remember yesterday I posted all those glittery pictures? The glitter continued today. I got my box from Katrina (that's her other blog - hilarity ensues there). I've got a question for y'all. If someone were to say to you, "Hey, I'm purging my handbags - do you want these Coach bags?" would you even hesitate? Or even ask what they look like? You wouldn't. You know you wouldn't. I didn't. And I temporarily forgot they were coming, so I was pretty surprised at the size of the box that was on my desk when I got back from lunch.

Contents:

This little wallet may become my new business card holder.

Candle holder - and the candle inside? DIVINE.

SO SHINY. Not this shiny in real life, but I immediately switched to this bag.

I actually had this bag as a knockoff but gave it away!
The box also contained some little jewelry travel bags, which I'm super excited about, and! A super-blinged-out iPhone case! I accosted Katrina when I saw hers this summer, and immediately her response was, "Do you want a pink one for Christmas?!" DUH. The last part of my gift is a Birchbox but won't be delivered until January sometime - I'll be posting what comes in it, fear not.

I wanna know - how often do you switch your handbags out? I find myself changing mine out every 3 weeks or so. It keeps me liking my bags; I don't get sick of them, because I don't carry them for a long period of time. And I find that I don't carry as much crap in my bag if I'm constantly switching them.

All this talk of gifts reminds me - the three of us maybe decided we deserve to have another holiday to exchange gifts. All of our birthdays are right around the same time, and of course Christmas, but I feel like we should get gifts at the end of summer too, just to even things up a bit. We may exchange gifts for Labor Day.

Today on my lunch break I went over to Ulta to return one of the Mario Badescu face washes I bought - (I bit the bullet and got a Proactiv kit. But I've decided to just buy at the kiosk in the mall instead of getting it mailed to me, because they charge you out the ass monthly and then you have a huge backstock of stuff that you'll never use) Ulta is like crack. Don't go in there thinking you can just do a return and skedaddle. They would only do an even exchange anyway, so I got some el cheap-o lotion to keep on my desk at work, and then some Lasplash super glitter eyeshadow in Fuse.

But while I was there my new work friend was buying a bunch of new makeup and brushes, which reminded me that I needed a foundation brush. I had one, and I stopped using it, and when I was packing to move I am pretty sure I said "meh! What the heck? I'm not going to use this, leave it here." So instead of having my mom go on a scavenger hunt through all of my belongings that I left at her house, I figured I'd check out ELF for pricing. WOULDN'T YOU KNOW they are having a BRUSH SALE! Eleven piece brush set for $2.12 - you have to spend $20.12 to get the deal. (Good luck with that. I have a hard enough time spending $15 to get free shipping.) (You're welcome, by the way. Every time I post something about ELF I get texts or messages on Facebook - "Look what you made me order!!!" Listen kids, I'm not putting your credit card number in. Not my fault. I only introduced you to the drug, I'm not feeding the addiction.)

This post is all over the place, and I'm not even done! So since the majority of my free-brain-time is used thinking about weddings - Katie's actually planning hers for real, and the rest of us just throw ideas back and forth like any of us are even remotely close to being engaged - I wanted to share this cake with you guys. I think it's a cool idea. What do you think? Kind of a traditional cake plus a groom's cake all at once.

via AWS - Like them on FB for Wedding Wednesday ideas

And in closing, Quote of the Day goes to Darrah:

"This is going to sound really awful of me, but why some of these guys who message me think they stand a chance... I will never understand."

Amen, sister. Anyone else online dating? I want to hear your stories!

Glitterbombed.

Today I got two boxes in the mail - one from my Mom and one from Janira. Now if you know me, you know I love glitter and anything sparkle.  But did you know just how much? Check these out:

Divine Swine & Rainbow Connection - OPI

I will never run out of glitter nail polish or glitter body spray, ever. I want to bathe in this glitter spray. It smells amazing. Which reminds me - when you're trying to pick out the next guy you date, make sure he appreciates you and the fact that you love to sparkle. He gives you shit for getting glitter on his blanket? DONE. No more dates, sir.

Another random to add to this rambling sparkle post --

Not pictured? The peppermint bark that I ate. ALL OF IT.
Not sparkles, but cookies. Just as good.

Also, this.

from All Women Stalk
I absolutely love this picture. I may do this for my tree next year, I love the idea. No pine needles to clean up, but still a place for a giant pile of presents. And I will obviously put me and Bailey in frilly dresses!

Listen up.

Second installment of Shit Girls Say. These videos are so true and hilarious.

Also (thanks Gabby!):

If a Man Wants You

By: Salma Rumman

If a man wants you, nothing can keep him away.

If he doesn’t want you, nothing can make him stay.

Stop making excuses for a man and his behavior.

Allow your intuition (or spirit) to save you from heartache.

Stop trying to change yourselves for a relationship that’s not meant to be.

Slower is better.

Never live your life for a man before you find what makes you truly happy.

If a relationship ends because the man was not treating you as you deserve
then heck no, you can’t "be friends."
A friend wouldn’t mistreat a friend.

Don’t settle. If you feel like he is stringing you along, then he probably is.

Don’t stay because you think "it will get better." You’ll be mad at yourself
a year later for staying when things are not better.

The only person you can control in a relationship is you.

Avoid men who’ve got a bunch of children by a bunch of different women.
He didn’t marry them when he got them pregnant,
Why would he treat you any differently?

Always have your own set of friends separate from his.

Maintain boundaries in how a guy treats you.

If something bothers you, speak up.

Never let a man know everything. He will use it against you later.

You cannot change a man’s behavior. Change comes from within.

Don’t EVER make him feel he is more important than you are...even if he has
more education or in a better job. Do not make him into a quasi-god.
He is a man, nothing more nothing less.

Never let a man define who you are.

Never borrow someone else’s man.
Oh Lord!  If he cheated with you, he’ll cheat on you.

A man will only treat you the way you allow him to treat you.
All men are not dogs.

You should not be the one doing all the bending...compromise is a two-way street.

You need time to heal between relationships...There is nothing cute about
baggage. Deal with your issues before pursuing a new relationship.

You should never look for someone to complete you. A relationship consists
of two whole individuals. Look for someone complimentary, not supplementary.

Dating is fun; even if he doesn’t turn out to be Mr. Right.

Make him miss you sometimes. When a man always know where you are, and you’re
always readily available to him—he takes it for granted.

Don’t fully commit to a man who doesn’t give you everything that you need.
Keep him in your radar but get to know others.

You’ll make someone smile, another rethink her choices, and another woman prepare.
They say it takes a minute to find a special person, an hour to appreciate
them, a day to love them, and an entire lifetime to forget them.

Done.

I am DONE Christmas shopping. Done. I braved the mall today (after taking the completely WRONG highway to get there - thank god for GPS), and it really wasn't all that awful. I ended up buying more for myself than for anyone else, but Old Navy was having a smokin' deal! The whole store was buy one get one free, so I got 2 pairs of PJ pants (pink plaid, of course) and 2 pairs of jeans for $50. And when you got their jingle jams, you got a free pair of comfy fuzzy socks. Boy do I love me some comfy fuzzy socks, I wear them to work sometimes.

All I have to do now is get some boxes in the mail. But me sending boxes = me getting boxes, so that's really exciting. Because what's Christmas all about? PRESENTS! (And Mama's sticky buns - YUM.)

I'm on my last disc of Deadwood, and I'm really upset about it. Next up in my queue is Modern Family Season 2, but what am I going to do without Timothy Olyphant in my life? I guess I could Netflix Justified, but its not quite the same. I'm about to upgrade to instant too so I can finish 24. It's going to take me 2 years to get through my queue at this rate.

Okay ladies, I need some help. When I got down here, my skin started to freak the eff out. I mean, I haven't broken out this bad in years probably. I attributed this to stress, since I wasn't working, but now that I have a job I'm far less stressed than I was, and its continuing. I went to the dermatologist and he gave me some antibiotics and some cream, neither of which has seemed to make that much of a difference. (At first I thought they were helping, but now I'm not convinced.) I don't want to go back and pay for another copay and cream that doesn't work. Does anyone have a cleanser routine they swear by? I stopped at Ulta today and got two trial sizes of Mario Badescu face wash, one deep cleanser and one for acne, so I'm hoping it helps. If not, I may have to just suck it up and go back to using Proactiv, because that shit works, but its expensive.

Also, Katrina has started another blog. Sparkle is still up and running, so please head there if you need any fashion inspiration - she is definitely the fashionable half of this BFF relationship. But her family reads that one, and if you know Katrina, you know her family is CRAY CRAY. So she started another one where she can be honest about the real stuff going on in her life. Head over to Paint It Black and leave her a comment. She loves those things. (Really, we all love comments. This is the danger of living in the Facebook Age.)

Have you heard of Shit Girls say? This video is so spot-on, I hate to admit it but it's hilarious. You know at one time or another you've said most of those things.

Can't finish a post without talking about boys though, can I? Of course not. Why is it, that when one guy starts to show interest, THEY ALL SHOW INTEREST? Do we give off a "I'm almost taken" scent and they all come running? It sounds silly, but think about the last time you started dating someone. I bet there was another guy who was waiting in the wings and trying to get your attention. I guess we can call these guys Secondaries, because normally they're someone you'd go out with if you didn't have the first guy already. My Secondary is pretty much All Talk (capitalization is necessary - he's been All Talk since the 8th grade), not to mention 900 miles away. But still fun to have that little bit of attention, no? I'm an attention whore, what can I say.

Brought to you by Janira: DATING FAIL: Ridiculous Email from a Guy You Should Never Date. This guy is out of his mind, and is what I was afraid was going to happen with ZG but I haven't heard from him. I also Googled myself - do it if you haven't recently - and nothing came up, thankfully, but you never know.

This week's Dating Quote of the Week brought to you by Janira:
"I'm trying to be a wife, not a rebound."
Amen, sister.

Catching Up

As I sat down to get this post started, Bailey decided she was not quite done getting attention. Helpful.
View from my lap

This is how I started my day yesterday:

omg doublerainbow - and its pink!
This is how I ended my night on Sunday:

The recipe is from here - if you don't follow Nik's blog, you should. She is all-around fabulous. I modified the recipe a bit - I got the bag of mint/chocolate chips mixed, and I nixed the green food coloring. Also, you need to bake them for at least 12 minutes otherwise they will fall apart. Which, if that's your thing, bake them for 10 minutes. Warning: you will not want to stop eating these once you start. I made these for date #2 with the guy I went out with last weekend - he made dinner and I made dessert - but I'm pretty sure we both could've just had cookies for dinner and been happy about it.

Speaking of dates - I think ZG got the hint, because I haven't heard from him. (Watch, this is me jinxing myself.) And big news: I disabled my OKC account. Literally every "match" they send me is either a creeper with children (how does that happen?! I mean, I know how it happens...) or a super geek who is fluent in C++. I don't even know what C++ is, so I'm pretty sure that means we are NOT A MATCH. Either I'm super picky or Charlotte is running out of eligible bachelors. Either one of these could be true, but I like to think that I just know what I want, rather than describe it as "picky". But I'm getting a good feeling about this guy I've had two dates with now - he's so not-weird I can't even give him a nickname, so I think that's a really good sign. Good job, nice apartment, nice car, normal routine, and he cooks. Holy hell, a man who knows what he's doing in the kitchen? That is unheard of! And no superhero costumes to be found (yet). Fingers crossed.

I have to give a shoutout to my new friend Alexis who I met during that horrible Ford temp job - I know she's a follower of the blog, and she's a... wait for it... STEELERS FAN!!!!!!! So so so excited about this! We went to Dixie's for last Thursday's game and had a great time. And we had a quick visit from a guy from OKC - at 7:30 he texted me to say he was showering and getting ready, at 8:45 that he was on his way, and he was gone by 9:10. Dude, it took you an hour and 45 minutes to get ready to hang out for 15 minutes? Why bother? I would've just stayed home.

Warning: Football Rant
(skip to next paragraph if you don't care about football)
Now, I understand the NFL is cracking down on helmet-to-helmet hits, trying to keep everyone safe, less concussions, blah blah blah. I get it. Guys are bigger now, they hit harder, and the NFL doesn't want to have to pay for long term medical for these guys who's brains get scrambled on the field. However. IT'S FOOTBALL. You sign up to play the game, you know the risks you take. You could get a concussion, or worse. But the rules that the NFL are enforcing are taking the football out of football. Know why all of the offenses this year are out of control with their scoring numbers? Because defensive players don't know how they're allowed to hit people, and the refs don't know what is a clean hit and what isn't. Ryan Clark of the Steelers hits a guy, doesn't get a penalty. Tomlin's showing this hit the next day in practice as a clean hit. Tuesday, Clark gets a fine from the NFL for said hit. Seriously? James Harrison, who has a reputation for being a hard-hitting (and mouthy, re: Roger Goodell) guy, had a bad year last year as far as hitting and fines go. He changed up his hitting style a bit, and has stayed out of trouble for about a year. Thursday night's game, Harrison hits Colt McCoy with a helmet-to-helmet hit that lays McCoy out. Harrison gets a 15 yard penalty, and I figured a fine was probably on it's way from Goodell's office, because any time Goodell can get Harrison to donate to the fine fund, he'll make him. The NFL announced Harrison's suspension today, citing that Harrison's hit was illegal because he violated a rule "that prohibits defensive players from using their helmet against a passer who is in a defenseless posture, including by "forcibly hitting the passer's head or neck area with the helmet or facemask." Specifics of this hit though? McCoy was out of the pocket, which technically makes him a runner, therefore cannot be classified as defenseless. He was holding the ball like he was going to run, and at the last split second, chucked the ball away. Even worse? Harrison wasn't even penalized for the helmet-to-helmet hit - he was penalized for ROUGHING THE PASSER! And for a guy who hasn't been fined this season, how is a suspension the immediate decision? Haynesworth stomping on a guys helmet-less head and Suh slamming a guy's head into the ground and then stomping on his arm, both after the whistle and blatantly violent, I can see ending in suspensions. And don't even get me started on Goodell unfairly targeting Pittsburgh players, thats a whole other argument and I know most of you that read this couldn't care less about football, so I'll spare you. For today, anyway.
/end rant

If we're Facebook friends then you've seen this, but I'm posting it again anyway because I cannot wait to see this movie. This spring is going to be filled with movies for me, I can tell already.

Doesn't that just give you goosebumps? I love love love Rachel McAdams, and c'mon, Channing Tatum? YES PLEASE. Makes me want to go watch The Notebook.

Just to wrap this up - are any of you on Twitter? You can follow me here - and if you aren't on it yet, you should be. I fought it for a long time - "what do you mean I can only use 140 characters?!" and "Twitter? Who needs Twitter? Its the same thing as Facebook!" Nope. Absolutely wrong. This is one of very few times I will admit when I am wrong, so mark it on your calendar and next year we'll throw a party. As Katrina put it - "its a place to follow people that you like but wouldn't friend on Facebook. Like, you wouldn't friend taza-and-husband on Facebook but you can follow her on Twitter and get the same updates." (Side note: I would, and did, friend Naomi on Facebook. But I am a stalker. She has a cute baby and a bulldog! And how often do I think babies are cute? Never.) And if you follow some big name celebs/bloggers/whoever they do a lot of giveaways - the Steelers players are always giving away tickets on Twitter because Facebook has some crazy contest rules that seriously puts a damper on winning anything. So, sign up, follow me and I'll follow you! Deal?
